Gilding
According to the legends, four fyasel: Ideran the crodoile, Yudak the eagle, Korh the fox, and Drakr the wolf had helped Fulfillment to take down the Nameless God by sacrificing their own life energy. While this cost them their lives Fulfillment rewarded them by restoring them into a new one and bestowing on each of them different powers. Exactly what these do has not yet been revealed other than the fact that any gilded fya is able to turn stone into their gilding element. For example, a fya with golden gilding can turn stone to gold while a fya with silver gilding could turn stone to silver.
These powers can be passed down through the generations, but do not always appear in every generation. Anyone who has inherited one of these powers gains a "gilded" attribute that varies based on the bloodline. This attribute causes the fur, feather, or scales on the animal form of a gilded fya to appear to be coated in their respective element.
Crocodile - Gold
Fox - Silver
Eagle - Bronze
Wolf - Obsidian
Anytime someone has inherited a gilded attribute they will have a chance of passing it down to any offspring. If the offspring doesn't turn out to be gilded, they still have the chance to pass down the attribute to one of their own children. Since these four bloodlines have a history of crossing occasionally it is possible for a child to be born with gilding that does not match the main species. (Such as a fox with the crocodile's Gold Gilding) However these fyasel are wildcards and may or may not inherit the powers that go with the gilding. Sometimes they will have powers to match their species, sometimes the power matches the type of gilding, sometimes both, and sometimes neither. For example, if a fox was born with the Golden Gilding that is supposed to go with crocodiles, they may have the power that matches the power passed down by the crocodile Ideran, or could instead have the power passed down by the fox Korh, or it could be a mix of the two, or they could be entirely lacking any powers from the Gilding.
However in all cases of unmatched gilding it is impossible for the attribute to be passed down to their children - though it still can be passed down if that person wasn't gilded themselves. For example a fox with the golden gilding could not pass it down to their children, but if that fox had a sibling who was not gilded, that sibling might be able to pass the attribute down.
It is impossible for a hybrid to be gilded as gilding will force a pure species onto a fya.
However with each generation that passes with no one born gilded, the gene will get weaker and it will be less likely to be passed down. Due to this it was thought that the Golden attribute went extinct within it's own species (crocodiles) since it had not appeared for nearly 2000 years. This gilding did finally show back up with Idier, but he was killed before the start of the story and no others have shown up aside from Athyir.
